Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Bob K — 19 Feb 2017
This was a hugely entertaining dumb movie which I completely enjoyed. There is a magnificence to the scale and grandeur of the Chinese forces who attempt to repel an invasion of giant roach-lizards every 60 years. The troops are beautifully arrayed, their fighting techniques are innovative even if impractical, and their dedication is distinguished.
Matt Damon and his fellow marauders come across the Great Wall and its forces shortly before one of these massive assaults begin. They are in search of black powder to take back to Europe, but Damon learns what it means to use his extraordinary and absurd archery skills for more than mercenary work.
The Chinese landscape deserves a mention. There are scenes which take place in areas analogous to the Monument Valley, but are fresh and very striking to Western eyes. I imagine there are many such landscapes and settings in China that we haven't seen much of, but I'm eager to learn about.
