Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Sarah R — 04 Mar 2017
I went to see the film expecting something cliche and didn't think I was going to enjoy it that much, but surprisingly the film was much better than my expectation and as a person who knows quite a bit of Chinese culture and history, the film used the "tao tie" references very cleverly, because this creature is widely known in Chinese ancient Mythology.
It shows the uniformity as a virtue in China and many major and popular Chinese stars are involved which I was very excited about. My boyfriend particularly liked the blue uniforms that the women wear as well as the aesthetic in general.
Every now and then, I must admit some plots are unrealistic, but as far as I am concerned within reasonable range. I appreciate the fact that the film gives native Chinese audiences and western audiences quite different experiences and thoughts, not as bad as what people say about it.
