Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Farah R — 14 May 2017
Zhang Yimou's epic fantasy reinvigorates the genre with spectacular visuals and superbly choreographed fight sequences. The Great Wall extends the mythology of one of the most iconic wonders of the world by creatively redefining the threat the Chinese armies fought against and how they did so.
Having the armies colored based on position was very clever and visually appealing, and the way their movements in battle were swift and effortless greatly resembled Peter Jackson's elves in The Lord of The Rings.
A badass female General was also great to watch especially since she wasn't thrown into an unnecessary romantic subplot with Matt Damon. I get why the film didn't earn better reviews but this movie was one of the few I immensely enjoyed.
