Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Nicholas V — 14 Jun 2017
Soooooo Great Wall was very vibrant and entertaining in a mix of good and bad ways. It's an ambitious film for sure, though the characters are sometimes way too cartoony to be taken seriously, and did they reeeeeeally need to pursue the awkward romantic-but-not-romantic storyline with that romcom formula we all know and hate? Story moments in here are so unbelievably forced that you just have to resign to go with it.
Pacing is awful and CGI is pretty bad. Though I surprisingly enjoyed some of the performances - I enjoyed Matt Damon here well enough even with his untraceable accent. This movie could be easily been 80 minutes - not a great thing to say, mind you, but would've made for an action-heavy creature battle flick that focused mostly in that stuff.
The whole side storyline you are in here with William DeFoe is rather pointless actually. I do actually like the realistic blunders in here, and most of the actions sequences were handled rather well with some cool shots and action cinematography.
I will, believe or not, give the nod to The Great Wall as being One-Watch Worthy, because even in its bad moments, it can get some chuckles or bewildered looks out of you. Of course I'd wait to see it until it's rentable, not quite worth the $11 movie price.
