Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Heather M — 10 Aug 2017
Director Yimou Zhang was responsible for 2 of my favourite Chinese fantasy martial arts films; House of the Flying Daggers and Hero. Both had style, well written stories and looked stunning. The Great Wall looks great, his films are always noted for his rich use of colours and this one is no exception.
When the brightly coloured soldiers take on the hoarding beasties in an acrobatic display it looks stunning. However, this is it's only saving grace, the rest of the film is badly written with terrible dialogue and Matt Damon looks out of place in this film, like he walked onto the wrong set and just decided to carry on anyway.
It's a great idea for a fantasy movie just poorly executed.
