Review of The Great Wall (2016) by Dan L — 23 Aug 2017
It's basically Edge of Tomorrow, but without the Live. Die. Repeat. video game gimmick. The Great Wall is a very enjoyable film. It's underwritten, but if you just want to watch Matt Damon fight monsters, The Great Wall is not a bad film.
Though when they try too tell a story, you might want to fall asleep because the characters are very bland and uninteresting. All the characters barely have a personality and even Matt Damon has been stripped of his charisma.
I get why Matt Damon was cast, but he was only in the movie to appeal to American audiences. His performance was fine, but he could've been played by anyone, even a Chinese actor if marketing to American audience wasn't so important.
For the most expensive movie in China, the CGI was kind of underwhelming. The Great Wall is a decent popcorn flick, but that's the best praise I can give to this forgettable film.
