For being totally fictional, although involving a real artifact (the wall), it wasn't as bad as I thought. Not every movie needs to be scientifically sound, but movies DO need to be believable and seem real, and I think the producers and directors at least did a good job of making it seem like it was real.

The monsters didn't seem cheap, and a lot of work seemed to be put into the animation and effects, which is this movies main feature (think LoTR scale battles - except humans versus monster - a better idea than LoTR in my mind).

Still, while high quality, they didn't really seem unique or memorable, but I guess that's hard when creating monsters (not every monster can look unique like Maurice from "Little Monsters", but I think this is what people want - memorable monsters and aliens).

Also, Matt Damon's acting was pretty good, and at least they got a key actor like Matt Damon and not someone a little less popular like Jason Statham (no offense to Statham, of course, since he can hold his own in movies no doubt).

I really don't know how they could've made this any better other than to alter the story and have made it modern day, or maybe that's a good idea for a sequel. Either way, not bad, and I feel like a lot of the low ratings and reviews are because of bias towards Chinese and foreign films in general, since, let's face it: nobody creates movies as good as Hollywood can.
