Review of The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) by Ron S — 16 Dec 2007
The one thing that impressed me about this film was how it handled very serious subject matters of war, death, personal triumphs and defeats in a very straightforward manner. It could have fallen into maudlinness but instead, the movie moved on from one challenge to another.
The death of Mary Beth, I thought, was perfectly told. She fell and that's that. No swelling music, no schmaltz. The script was also well-written. The dialogue between Pepper and Kessler was quite engaging, a fitting scene to weed out the myth from the facts about the great flying legend that is Kessler.
The aerial shots were spectacular with excellent editing and the art direction was impeccable - it really takes you to the 30s. You don't have to be a pilot to appreciate this film. As long as you have a dream and will do what it takes to reach that dream, you will find yourself identifying with the great Waldo Pepper.
