Review of The Great Raid (2005) by Bonnie S — 22 Nov 2009
Not your typical WWII movie. Instead of back to back action sequences broken up by a few moments of drama, The Great Raid essentially is a drama, with only a few action sequences. The bulk of the film is a buildup to the big rescue mission which only lasts about 15 minutes; the rest is a magnification of the suffering of the POWs and the efforts of the Manila underground.
Relatively mild suspense, very restrained violence for its rating, and excellent work by the cast, especially Fiennes and Nielsen. Anyone expecting a war epic in the tradition of Saving Private Ryan will be disappointed, but The Great Raid delivers satisfactorily as a war time drama.
