Review of The Great Race (1965) by David G — 06 Sep 2007
Brilliant fun! Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood are a lovely couple and Jack Lemmon's Professor Fate is such a lovable villain - you love to hate him as well as his dopey assistant Max (Peter Falk). The cars are neat too, both the Leslie Special and the Hannibal 8! The opening of the film is hilarious with Prof.
Fate's endless attempts to outdo and/or derail Leslie's daredevil antics but the film doesn't kick into gear until the race itself starts. It's great watching the characters progress around the world, getting into all sorts of crazy situations, and there's such a variety too - the Wild West, a snowstorm covered wilderness, a regal European court, and the set-pieces are so much fun, everything from the Wild West brawl to the comical pie fight to the intense sword duel between Leslie and Baron Rolfe von Stuppe.
It's just crammed full to the brim with great scenes and is a blast from beginning to end.
