Review of The Great Outdoors (1988) by Jordan P — 15 Jan 2010
When Hughes was unavailable to direct, he would call on the underrated Howard Deutch, and he does a superb job of this wonderful Family film. Aykroyd and Candy share a brilliant chemistry and both give excellent performances.
The biggest howlers go to the water skiing scene and When our hapless hero's try and capture a bat in their cabin. My only fault is the extremely forced and cheesy romantic sub plot, between the teenage son and the pretty girl on the campsite, the film could of simply done without it.
The great outdoors is a fantastic rainy day movie. Timeless.
