Review of The Great Outdoors (1988) by Jeff H — 10 Jul 2011
If you have fond memories of this movie, I suggest you stop reading and hang on to them. Believe it or not, I'd never see this movie, so needless to say I was pretty happy to see it on Netflix. I love John Candy and Dan Akroyd's great too.
What we have here though seems like a Hollywood cash in that actually delivers very few laughs, and is a bit of a mess in the continuity department (and I NEVER catch that stuff). I do believe they shoehorned in a love story for the teenage boy after the movie didn't screen well with younger folk.
That's only a guess, but that subplot is a train wreck. Otherwise an easy watch and a few laughs along the way. Just not up to Candy/Akroyd potential. Not recommended.
