Review of The Great Muppet Caper (1981) by Corey N — 17 Aug 2009
Charles Grodin and Kermit the Frog dueling it out for Miss Piggy's affections via song (!) during a Busby Berkely-inspired water-dance sequence (!!) is one of the single most memorable scenes of any film from my childhood.
Without a doubt my favorite Muppet film, Kermit and Fozzy play THEMSELVES playing twin detectives in London in a movie...how meta right?! Miss Piggy plays an aspiring fashion model and gets caught up in a love triangle between her British fashion guru boss' criminal brother (Grodin, not hiding his American accent) and detective Kermit.
Occasionally, characters break the fourth wall of their "film" characters (Kermit at one point interrupts Piggy during a hilarious meltdown to tell her she's overacting and "hamming it up," wokka wokka).
..pretty high-level for a kids film. The rapid-fire comedy mostly hits and the songs are uniformly excellent...highly recommended to irreverent humorists of all ages. Oh, and did I mention you get to see Miss Piggy crashing through a stained-glass window on a motorcycle? Brilliant!
