Review of The Great Mouse Detective (1986) by Danielle T — 21 Aug 2009
An early favorite of mine, so more a nostalgic experience than quality filmmaking. Nevertheless, the voice acting is astounding, especially Vincent Price's diabolical work as Professor Ratigan. The character is also especially well animated with delicacy and beaurocratic ease, then a frightening turn into a murderous monster.
He is certainly the most memorable character, and it's obvious Disney assured it be so, seeing that Price's skills in villainy were its backbone. The absurdly specific detective work from Basil is a pleasantly miticulous parody/homage that is a testament to the writing.
Overall, it's clever. Cleverness, subtlety, and suspense are all qualities that grace this lesser known Disney flick.
