Review of The Great Mouse Detective (1986) by Kelsey H — 27 Jan 2010
What do you get combining Mickey Mouse and Sherlock Holmes? Why its elementary my dears, The Great Mouse Detective! Set on the murky Victorian London streets, the viewer is treated to a "mousedom" complete with its own great detective, Basil of Baker Street.
The genius mouse is accompanied by his fat jolly mustached companion Dawson. A young client named Olivia comes to Baker Street in need of assistance and the story takes off from there. While still relatively upbeat as with almost all animated disney fare, the dark streets and artistic direction give it a slightly murkier tone.
This movie is seldom brought up in Disney discussions but its one that does not deserve to be overlooked. The plot is mostly solid with equally adequate voice acting (most notably the late Vincent Price as Rattigan) and the pace keeps you interested the entire time.
If this film isn't considered to be one of the Disney Renaissance pack, its at least a formidable precursor. Not the easiest film to come across but if you're looking for a decent animated selection this one fits the bill.
