Review of The Great Mouse Detective (1986) by Kyle O — 20 Dec 2011
Average and sometimes a lot of fun, "The Great Mouse Detective" is a delightful low-budget Disney animated feature with some impressive moments. After the financial debacle that was "The Black Cauldron", Disney management had cut the budget on this film.
Its animation isn't much to write home about, but the animators clearly had fun with the Sherlock Holmes-like story, which is a little more fun than the likes of "The Fox and the Hound" and "The Black Cauldron".
The use of computer animation in the film's climax is a plus, and the scene differs from the rest of the film both visually and stylistically. The art direction is also good, giving London a dark, foggy atmosphere.
The story, however, is unspectacular. Vincent Price gives a memorable performance as Professor Ratigan, while the the rest of the cast does their job. Barrie Ingham gives Basil a very cocky but funny personality, another plus.
"The Great Mouse Detective" is not necessarily a good Disney animated film, but a decent one that has its moments.
