Review of The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief (2006) by Alyssa N — 08 Oct 2010
Most Americans know little about the unique Japanese phenomenon known as "host clubs" besides, perhaps, their lighthearted portrayal in anime. So it was fascinating for me to learn about the inner workings of a real host club through revealing interviews with some of its most popular hosts and devoted clients, in which the filmmakers aren't afraid to ask uncomfortable questions.
Because this up-close and intimate documentary doesn't just show us the fantasy, it takes us far deeper to a world thatâ??s borderline nightmarish. Some of the footage from the clubs is shocking, as is the serious life-controlling addition these women are revealed to have, and which is encouraged by the hosts.
A bit disorganized, but still worth watching if you truly want to learn more about the subject â?? just remember the title is ironic to a depressing degree.
