I loathed reading the novel in high school. I never sympathized with the insipid Daisy or the title character. However, Leonardo DiCaprio brings Gatsby to life. I love Baz Lurhmann's films and this was no exception.
It's a spectacle, but you cannot turn your eyes away from the lavish scenery and the phenomenal crop of actors. I do not understand the negative reviews in the slightest. Was especially impressed with Tobey Maguire's performance as Nick - the only character I cared about in the original source material.
