Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Shane L — 21 Mar 2014
It's easier to simply list my qualms with this film. Leo's accent is awkward, Toby's acting is continually fluffed like a pillow but always falls flat, Carey Mulligan is a decent actress but miscast here, and the "opulent" style really plays as a parody of itself.
This flashy, overrated film is a slap in the face to Fitzgerald's 1925 novel. The one compliment I have for this movie is Elizabeth Debicki's performance as Jordan Baker. She comes off very cool but interested and captures the essence of the era and the character better than anybody else working on the movie.
Sorry Leo, you tried, and you weren't terrible, but it's hard to lead a mob when you're the only one walking (save for Debicki, who's a couple steps ahead of you this time).
