Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Vedran S — 23 Jun 2014
It took me quite a few nights to watch this, as I would constantly pause it due to the uncontrollable urge to move and get away.
I have no quarrel with Leonardo DiCaprio's acting or portrayal of Gatsby but I was heartbroken by the over-the-top, clowny tone of the movie that had all the characters sped up as if they were coked-out cartoons.
I LOVE the book so I shouldn't be surprised by my disappointment, but I had hoped that such a big production would do right by the novel, but instead a ridiculous soundtrack keeps beat with acid-trip mockery of what made the book great. The CGI/blue screen backdrops with the blurry, dream like filming distract from a wonderful story that is slowly butchered by bad editing, directing and tone. Too outlandish, even for a film set in the Jazz Age.
