Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Race T — 21 Jul 2014
I've read Fitzgerald's novel in my junior year of high school. I didn't hate the novel but I didn't necessarily like it either. This film was a fabulous adaptation of the classic novel, making me like the film version more than the actual novel.
The incredibly handsome Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, was sensational as always. Baz Luhrmann's directing style can be a bit overwhelming at times (like in his past films for example: Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Australia), but in this instance, his in-your-face and over the top directing approach suits well in visualizing the glitz and glamour of the Roarin' 20s onto film, especially during the lavish party scenes held at Gatsby's mansion.
Exquisite sets and costume design. The contemporary music surprisingly fits well with the atmosphere of this decade. Overall, this film is the best Gatsby rendition to date and is an entertaining and engaging film experience, most notably because of DiCaprio's outstanding performance as the mysterious millionaire.
