Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Movie B — 26 Sep 2014
I thought this star crossed lovers story was absolutely beautiful. I am always disappointed when I read reviews from people sometimes- they didn't watch it because it had rap music. So? Did you ever stop and consider that they did that to take an old story and try to make it feel relevant to current times and not just a "hey, lets just put in some rap music for the heck of it"? Sure, it was superfluous but that it the point- how far Gatsby would go to impress the woman he loved.
I had never read Gatsby or seen any version of a movie based on the story so I had a fresh look at it but for whatever reason critics seem to hate every adaptation of the book to a movie and even rating this version higher than the one with Robert Redford.
Regardless, it is a slow burn and the ending is biting, heartbreaking and tragic and it stayed with me. The current day music really didn't distract from the movie like Moulin Rouge does, which oddly enough nobody seemed to have a problem with that.
