Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by James W — 21 Mar 2014
Waited too long to watch this one, but I had good reason. I had to study the book for a year in English A-Level, it was awful. We looked deeply into the meaning of words and lines and it just lost me, so I was put off by the movie completely, but I've finally watched it after waiting at least a year and this is a spectacular movie.
The direction is energetic, you feel like you're at the party that's taking place and in 3D it's even better, sparkly bits and people hands extend out the screen, as does Jay Gatsby's glass when DiCaprio finally makes an appearance as fireworks explode behind him, leaving you in awe knowing this movie is being led by one hell of a star.
The supporting cast only add to the solidarity of the talent here, I thought Joel Edgerton plays a nasty piece of work brilliantly, Adelaide Clemens is sexy and stylish and Carey Mulligan adds yet another pitch perfect performance to her career full of them.
Would I watch this again? Most likely, not anytime soon but a second viewing is on the horizon.
