Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Lesley M — 22 Apr 2014
"Alternately intriguing and infuriating: it's very like the sort of movie exuberantly excessive Gatsby himself might have made." ~ MaryAnn Johanson, Flick Filosopher.
Ms Johanson deemed this a negative, but it's actually one of the many reasons this movie is total Gatsby win.
Love DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire is fantastic, and Carey Mulligan is pure, perfect magic. Very well cast over all, stunning sets, drop-dead gorgeous costumes, and a brilliant soundtrack all swirled into Luhrmann madness.
I can see how Fitzgerald purists and/or Luhrmann haters would be put off by this telling. It's Luhrmann. He takes liberties. So if you can't get past that, you probably won't enjoy it, but if you can ... oh, the joys that await you. :D.
