Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Misha B — 19 Feb 2015
Although many deem this film extravagant and over-done, I find Luhrmann's interpretation of the story captures the whimsical nature of the tale. Fitzgerald's intent was not to "repeat the past" but to caution his readers of the pitfalls of the culture that was forming in the 1920s.
Luhrmann's displays of Gatsby's extravagant parties, surreal wealth of the Buchanan residence, and elaborate costuming take the 1920s to the extremes that Fitzgerald was warning us of.
