Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Bridgette H — 23 Apr 2016
The Great Gatsby film was a well put together production. It was full of excitement and splendor. The movie kept viewers on their toes and thoroughly intrigued. Overall, the film followed the actual book very well including almost all exact quotes from the text.
The characters were portrayed well. Gatsby maintained his shady yet blindly innocent disposition throughout up to his death. Daisy was exactly how I had imagined her to be based on her descriptions in the book. Nick's role was well played as he watched everything unfold. His reactions and facial expressions were very ideal. Jordan seemed to me to be a bit strange and undesirable unlike what the book portrayed. Tom Buchanan's masculinity and arrogance entailed all that the book offered. Lastly, Meyer Wilson's character was not what I envisioned. HIs look didn't exactly fit the part.
The setting seemed to be a little too modern for the time period. The buildings were modern skyscrapers. The houses reflected that of the houses you may see today. It was as if they inserted old themes into modern New York. I think the film was intended to be composed of the book including a modern twist. I enjoyed it but it was a stretch considering the time period in which the book took place. The older styled clothing and hair did not exactly correspond with the modern scenery.
The mood was great. It definitely portrayed what I think Fitzgerald was attempting to achieve through his writing. Every scene's mood was similar to that in the book. I think that the producers and film directors did a fantastic job with this and I have no critiques.
The film portrayed the book very well in the party scene. The entertainment, debauchery, and the overall atmosphere fit Fitzgerald's vision to a T. The party was chaotic, lively, impressive and expensive as readers would have expected it to be.
The book and the movie go hand in hand and I commend all who partook in the success of the film.
