Those who try to surpass a masterpiece seldom succeed. Gatsby's enigmatic, low-key, and conflicted personality is superbly portrayed by Robert Redford in the 1974 film. DiCaprio's performance belies the disciplined subtlety that was Gatsby's essence.
Similarly, the performances of Mia Farrow, Sam Waterson, Bruce Dern, and Karen Black were perfect.
