Review of The Great Gatsby (2013) by Michael L — 12 Oct 2015
I can't objectively judge this movie, since the plot more or less followed the book and I don't like the book. Fitzgerald seems to think that the tragedy in his characters' lives was that they did bad things and still didn't get what they wanted.
He doesn't spend nearly enough time on exploring the possibility that what they wanted was ultimately worse than what happened to them. The movie itself had lots of glitz and pizzazz, but Tobey Maguire's acting left something to be desired.
And apparently they had R&B music in the 1920s. Who knew?
