Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Anthonymoreno "The Definition O — 08 Feb 2010
Being fairly faithful to the plot doesn't make the movie any better. Oh, how I dislike Mia Farrow's acting. She is a silly, silly, silly little girl. Redford's portrayal of Gatsby was all wrong.
In the book, Gatsby seemed stronger, more arrogant, and only starts to loose his edge when he overtly demonstrates his obsessive love for Daisy. In this adaptation, he was a wimp from the start. Another thing the film gets wrong - the depiction of the time period.
The film glamorizes the 20s. The whole point of the book is the disillusionment people were starting to feel in the 20s and the difference in the classes - even among the wealthy. In general, the acting made this painful to watch.
