Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Carolyn G — 05 Dec 2010
Mediocre-to-decent adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. Very faithful to the book, though maybe too much so. There is very little in the way of innovation and the movie just seems to go through the motions at times. At 144 minutes the movie drags, and could have been edited better, or some scenes and progressions handled more succinctly.
On the plus side, the settings and costumes are great. The movie captures well the main thrust of Fitzgerald's book - the superficial opulence of the 1920s.
Worth watching if you haven't read the book. Otherwise, you will be disappointed.
