Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Post G — 13 Jul 2011
One of the very best novels I read in college. What is then that I disliked about the film adaptation? There are glorious sets, an almost word-for-word script adapted from the novel (which leads me to deem Coppola as a shameless self-publicist in claiming he 'wrote' the screenplay) and a credible envisioning of the roaring 20s in Upper Class New York.
However, there are three conclusions I've come to in reasoning why the film didn't work fully for me. (a) it's hideously over-acted, (b) I found it better to experience the story through various sittings rather than have it all squashed into 2 hours and a bit i.
E. it seem forced, and (c) some novels are so specially designed to be realised in a reading that it's impossible to re-create the magic for the big screen (effectively the same conclusion as (b)!).
A good effort nevertheless...and isn't it great they're going to re-make it again next year?!
