Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Austin P — 14 May 2013
What a bore! I understand this movie was one of the most hyped films in 1974 and was critically bashed... But, older movies often get better with time. With all of the hype for the 2013 GATSBY, I viewed the film for the first time from start to finish last night and what a snooze-fest it was. Even in terms of dated acting, it was just comical at times. I thank most of these laughs to the script by Coppola that skipped around in sleepy-fashion, and was full of so many random one-liners, no wonder it was hard for the actors to deliver them believably. While the main storyline of GATSBY is there, the spirit, romance, and heartbreak is all void. There is no emotion to be given for this cast of characters... I never got the impact of "amazement" that is supposed to come with the wild nightly parties, etc. It all seemed a bit hokey.
The film is long, and it seems VERY LONG to the point of yawn inducing.
It is great to see such a cast attached to a film together, and as I understand, this was Robert Redford's pet-project, but it just fails...
You just anticipate the movements, knowing you are one chapter closer to the end with each scene.
Was hoping this would be good.... so disappointed.
