Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Lee B — 23 Nov 2008
If you haven't seen this, then where have you been all your life?
Perennial classic war movie, starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and a whole host of others.
The Luftwaffe are sick of the constant escape attempts of the Allied prisoners and decide to stick all their bad eggs in one basket. Inspired by true events, this story of Tom, dick and Harry and the men's efforts to stay sane in the endless boredom of the life of a POW, will never disappoint - no matter how many times you watch it.
You will agonise each and every time Gordon Jackson boards the bus and makes the very mistake he warned his fellow prisoners to avoid. And the motorcycle chase with Steve McQueen chasing Steve McQueen is one of those defining moments of cinema history. You're on the edge of your seat every time, willing jump to be just that little farther.
This film is a timeless classic and deserves pride of place in everyone's DVD collection.
