Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Todd L — 05 Jun 2009
This works so well --- 46 years after it first appeared --- because it's a true ensemble movie. Steve McQueen really shines as a star, but his spark fits his character and is fitted well into the mosaic of performances.
The camp itself is probably the central character. The film, surprising for a major Hollywood epic of the time, handles failure well. It's a guys movie. And the moviemakers felt no need to find a place for a token woman.
