Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Amanda B — 24 Mar 2011
The greatest prison movie ever and arguably the great World War II movie ever! This film was epic and had one of the strongest casts ever seen in film history. James Garner, Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, and of course Charles Bronson all in the same film.
I always wonder which film Bronson had more fun doing, this one or the Dirty Dozen. The script based on Paul Brickhill's book was seamless and it did not drag on, which is amazing given it is nearly 3 hours long.
The ending was bittersweet but the escape and the planning itself were the real stars of the film. Definitely must see for all World War II film lovers.
