Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Jen R — 23 Jul 2013
A Hollywood cornerstone of boys films. The original Expendables. Running close to three hours it's still one of those films that if you catch any of the first 30 minutes, you'll find yourself settled in for the duration.
There are very few "breakout" films like it, especially those that feature so many characters. The scenes post the breakout are still my favourite, following the different men as they scatter across the German countryside.
McQueen, Garner, Coburn...it's pure 60s machismo. An out-and-out classic.
