Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Eric M — 04 Jan 2015
One of the absolute greatest action and war films of all time, "The Great Escape" deserves its classic status, chocked full of marvelous characters, a fascinating and gripping true story, and masterful performances all around.
The story takes its time to unfold, which works in its favor, drawing the audience to truly get to know and root for the motley crew of escapees. It also features a surprisingly nuanced portrayal of German soldiers for the time as well.
The emotional payoff of the entertaining slow build is immense, leading to thrilling, tense, and often surprisingly emotional action. Aided by Elmer Bernstein's classic score and some great cinematography, "The Great Escape" is a must watch for any fan of cinema.
Wit, intelligence, suspense, drama, humor, and action are all to be found within this gem of a picture.
