Review of The Great Escape (1963) by Jesse B — 09 Sep 2010
It would be both correct and incorrect to say that The Great Escape is simply a rehashing of the Jean Renoir masterpiece, The Grand Illusion. True, both are prison escape films, and both share a similar plot element (tunneling through earth for freedom).
However, where as Renoir's film is more interested in making a statement about the nature of war through its characters and the various predicaments which they find themselves in, John Sturges' The Great Escape is more about the adventure and thrill of journey.
In fact the movie is so thrilling that it earns very high marks on my list of favorite movies. A better time in the cinema for pure escapism you will not find. This film has it all.
