Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Steven B — 11 Nov 2008
Moves me to tears. Exceptional, daring filmmaking with a noble aim. (My jaw dropped during the barbershop/Hungarian Rhapsody sequence. And Hynkel's first speech. AND that iconic dance with the globe.
And that speech! God...that SPEECH!) Had Chaplin not been such a perfectionist--pushing past the 500th shooting day--and released this pic before Hitler's invasion of Poland, I wonder what might have happened in the global arena.
We will never see a moment in cinema history like this: the world's most beloved talent using his craft to take down the world's most feared dictator. Shattering.
