Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Andrew C — 05 Jan 2010
One of the best anti-war, anti-stupidity films ever made. I can't believe Chaplin's bravery to make this at the height of the Nazi party's power. The film is made even better just by the sheer insanity of what Chaplin was able to do in 1940. In the 2000s, no one would even attempt something like this. When did we become so scared of comedy?
Chaplin gives the performance of his career...and in his first speaking role, btw. Just a funny, endearing, powerful film. And the ending monologue...just perfection. The last 10 minutes may be one of the greatest speeches in film history. A call to action that even post-WW2 was not met. Will the world ever get over itself?
