Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Shane S — 07 Dec 2010
Charlie Chaplin goes subversive with this tour de force of black comedy, heartwrenching drama, and that trademark whimsy you could only get from Hitler's good twin brother.
While not as refreshing or influential as "City Lights" and the equally (sometimes even more) subversive "Modern Times", "The Great Dictator" manages to rouse up the viewer while fulfilling its goal of making everybody laugh.
Props to Jack Oakie who was just perfect as Emperor Napolini.
