Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Jonathan G — 18 Oct 2011
This movie was amazing - both for it's time and forever. Charlie Chaplin was in the prime of his popularity and took on possibly the most dangerous dictator that the world had ever seen (Hitler) and battled him through the medium of film.
This is the first movie that Charlie Chaplin ever speaks in and boy does he. His monologue at the end may have just changed how the world turned. It is said that Hitler himself watched it several times.
Chaplin had to pay out of his own pocket to make it, spending over 300 days filming it. A true masterpiece. I hate that the Chaplin was exiled from the U.S. the way he was. He should be remembered as a hero to all that is good in the world.
