Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Steve G — 22 Feb 2015
Chaplin talks?!
It's pretty incredible to think that Chaplin actually made a film of his mustache-mate, at the time that he was in power. The comparison was not lost on him. Yet they were so different in so many ways. One made more people smile than any man in history. The other created more suffering than any man in history. It's remarkable to think that all these Nazi terms that have been mocked subsequently were a reality, at the moment of filming; that the incidents that were being mocked were a global phenomenon. In addition to its historical significance, it's just a good movie.
