Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Stefan P — 02 Mar 2009
Commander Shutz - Strange, and I thought you were an Aryan.
A Jewish barber - No. I'm a vegetarian.
10/10.
The Great Dictator is Chaplin's greatest accomplishment and serves as a bitter satire of fascism in Nazi-Germany.
Chaplin's first talkie tackles the subject of nazism it's follies in WW2. His signature over-the-top humour is still present but the transition from silent to sound has not caused it to lose any of it's genuine appeal or earnestness.
Chaplin's masterpiece is hillarious and moving, a film that is both comical and uplifting.
