Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Rameshwar N — 15 Nov 2012
Here we have what most people consider to be Charlie Chaplin's finest work as a filmmaker: The Great Dictator. It's a valid argument, but it's not one I agree with. I do think that the film is a masterpiece though.
It's great that the Tramp's character's first talking picture is one that gets a bit serious. If it just simply tried to do a pure slapstick comedy without a solid story then it probably wouldn't have been nearly as successful as it was.
It's a classic tale of the Prince and the Pauper with the Tramp and Dictator Hynkel who, through a series of circumstances, end up replacing each other. And that final speech from the Tramp, oh my goodness.
If you're a human being in any capacity then you were probably like me and had tears in your eyes at the end when he gives his speech about love and freedom. It could have come off so hokey and cheesy, but at that point, you're ready for it, and it knocks you out completely.
This film is quite a marvel, and if you haven't seen it, then you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. A fantastic film from beginning to end.
