Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Alex V — 16 Feb 2013
Alternatively ingenious and conventional, Chaplin's work as the dictator Hynkel is wonderfully eccentric stuff, while his work as the Jewish barber comes off as pretty generic. Whenever the movie tries to push for relationships, it comes up short. The comedy bits are often enough to make up for the flaws. Chaplin's speech at the end is astounding.
