Review of The Great Dictator (1940) by Cle S — 19 Apr 2014
A rare piece of daring filmmaking, this is perhaps the best political persiflage based on real events. Charlie Chaplin is the perfect cast for A. Hynkel, not only because of his eccentric beard, but also because of his year of birth (1889).
Without naming any real places or persons they smartly manage to untighten the provocation level, however the allusions lose nothing of their obviousness. The stirring speech at the end of the film is even more topical now than ever.
