Review of The Great Debaters (2007) by Prasad P — 02 Jan 2009
A truly superior feel-good movie from director-star Denzel Washington, who makes a grand aspirational statement in the story of a college professor in 1930's America who challenged social mores and the establishment with a prize-winning debate team at the blacks only Wiley College.
Superbly directed, wonderfully acted and beautifully placed, this one is a truly uplifting film. Most triumph-over-adversity stories take the easy way out, casting black kids as sportsmen and women. Not so for Washington: he dares to make a statement for the greater intellectual and moral apirations of a marginalized minority.
Superb.
