Review of The Great Debaters (2007) by Chin J — 03 Mar 2009
The movie sets out to give everything: good acting, historical background about the civil rights movement, interesting characters, but good debates. Aside from a couple of scenes where Denzel delivers some great debates, as expected, there are no debates from the real debate competitors.
The actors playing the competitors are believable as potential victors over Harvard's team, but it seems like their acting potential were held back by the producers. I liked the movie's inclusion of portraying the harsh times of the civil rights movement and how it is weaved through the course of the debates.
But this movie should not have been afraid of allowing the characters to engage in more debates.
