Review of The Great Debaters (2007) by Scott F — 11 Jul 2010
This is a period piece set in US 1935. First: Denzel Washington is doing the role of his lifetime. To try to put it into words I think it is about him reaching registers in his performances which are outside his normal comfort zone.
Second: Forest Whittaker is doing the role of his lifetime. He is very convincing. Third: The script, one of the sidecasts and the scenes are bit crafted at times. The soundtrack is underlining the movie too deeply, leaving too little room for the viewer to breath.
The message does carry and is universal and true to this day.
